The West Sussex Guitar Club in association with West Dean College is
proud to announce that the ninth West Sussex Guitar Festival will again
feature the WSGF West Dean Scholarship Competition.
Awarded to the most promising young person playing at Grade V standard
or above, the Scholarship Competition winner will receive
non-residential attendance at the West Dean International Guitar
Festival and Summer School 2009, courtesy of West Dean College. The runner up will receive a £200 bursary towards attendance.
The Summer School is a six-day guitar event that provides superb learning
opportunities for all levels. Repertoire and technique classes form the
core of the programme, with additional ensembles and a guitar orchestra.
Students also receive individual lessons and attend public recitals by
visiting artists.
The Scholarship is open to any young person who will be 15 years or
older at the time of the summer school (August 2009), and under 18 years
at the time of the competition (November 2008)
The winner will be selected by festival adjudicator, Graham Devine. In addition to adjudicating what promises to be the most successful festival to date, Graham Devine will be giving the traditional Festival Recital on Friday 21st November.
In addition to the West Dean Scholarship Competition, the Festival has the
special prize of a quality classical guitar generously donated by Spanish guitar makers Guitarres Camps which will be awarded to the most deserving candidate participating in the junior section.
Also, the special prize of a copy of Sibelius G7 music writing software will be awarded to the overall winner of th Arrangement & Composition classes. The club is very grateful to Sibelius for donating this software.

To promote appreciation and enjoyment of music in the community through the
art of the Classical Guitar
To provide an open forum for students, teachers and admirers of Classical
guitar
To encourage the appreciation and awareness of different learning and teaching
methods
To create a platform for performers of every level and age. To enable
participants to demonstrate achievement in the mastery of Classical guitar, to perfect
performing skills and to share music with new audiences
To help participants meet new challenges by engaging in fair competition. To
encourage appreciation and respect for achievement in the art of music making.
To create conditions for developing new audiences in the field of Classical
Music.
The Festival is initiated, supported and will be run by the West Sussex Guitar Club and the Regis School of Music
Performers are asked not to repeat the same piece if entered in more than one class and to observe time limits for performances.

Paul Gregory started playing guitar at the age of 10. Later he also studied cello and composition in London. He gave his Wigmore Hall debut when 19. Three years later he won the Andres Segovia International Competition in Spain. Paul has made many BBC Radio 3 programmes including live broadcasts from the NTL Studio in Belfast and the Wigmore Hall, as well as from Broadcasting House. Paul has been invited to most parts of the world including the Americas and Hong-Kong. Presently he lives in Brighton and runs his own small company importing guitars from Spain. Paul has been a visiting professor to the Royal Irish Academy and Chief External Examiner for the Royal Scottish Academy. He teaches at the East Sussex Academy in Lewes. Paul has a number of released CD recordings and published compositions, some of the latter being used as set pieces for examination boards in France and England. Future invitations include concerts at the Nantes Conservatoire, the State University New York and a new recording on original Antonio Torres guitars from the Westbrook. This year
also sees recitals with pianist Yoko Ono, flautist Rachel Smith and in duo with
guitarist Miles Roberts.
Paul is musical director for the weekly Tuesday Lunchtime Concerts at the Chapel Royal, Brighton.
Paul will be adjudicating the junior classess.
Graham Anthony Devine was born in England and began
his musical studies at Chetham's School of Music in Manchester with Gordon Crosskey. He moved to Brazil in his teens and became an established performer and teacher there, giving many recitals and master-classes throughout South America. He is a laureate of many international guitar competitions in Europe and the United States and in 2002 he won first prize at the prestigious
Alhambra International Guitar Competition held in Alcoy, Spain. He repeated this success by winning first prize at the Emilio Pujol International Guitar Competition in Italy in the same year. He has performed in more tan twenty
countries in solo recital performances and as a soloist with orchestra, and has appeared many times on television and radio throughout Europe and South
America. Widely considered as one of today's very best young guitarists,
Graham is currently in much demand as a recitalist, concerto soloist and
international competition jury member.
Graham currently teaches guitar at the Trinity College of Music, London.
Graham will be adjudicating the senior classes.
Rules of WSGF Scholarship Competition
1. The Scholarship will comprise non-residential attendance by the successful candidate at the West Dean International Guitar Festival and Summer School held at West Dean in August 2009
2. The competition will be held during the West Sussex Guitar Festival Senior Day on Sunday 23 November 2008.
3. The candidate shall play two or more contrasting pieces, of Grade 5 or above. The programme will last up to 8 minutes. The music chosen shall be of a classical nature.
4. The candidate must also participate in the West Sussex Guitar
Festival by entering in one or more of the solo classes.
5. The age of the candidate shall be 15 or above at the time of the West Dean International Guitar Festival and Summer School (August 16 to 22 2009) and not more than 18.
6. The West Sussex Guitar Club (WSGC) will organise the Award Competition on behalf of West
Dean College. The scholarship will be awarded by the Senior Day Festival Adjudicator.
7. The Adjudicator will select a winner and a runner-up. The runner-up will receive £200 towards attending the West Dean Guitar Festival. The runner up will receive full scholarship in the event that the winning candidate is unable to attend.
